Remember Grace?
Grace garnered international headlines in 2020. Grace was a young teen when we met. Grace was on probation right when the pandemic began. Like most students, Grace experienced the normal challenges of transitioning from in-person school to online zoom school. Grace was no different from her classmates, and no different from adults, as we all adjusted to the worldwide pandemic that forced relationships and life to move online. When her probation officer followed up with Grace and learned that Grace had not done her schoolwork, it was reported to the judge. A probation violation hearing was held, Grace was found guilty of not doing her schoolwork, and she was sentenced to juvenile detention at Children's Village.
I was one of two attorneys who represented Grace. I filed an application with the Michigan Court of Appeals arguing for her immediate release to the care and custody of her mother. The Court of Appeals granted the request. I was at Children's Village and watched as Grace walked out of the jail and jumped into the car with her mom and went home.
February 2023. A pregnant woman in Macomb County found herself in a serious dilemma. She was pregnant and driving a car when she was stopped by local law enforcement. The car was not insured and had an expired plate. She was arrested and taken into custody. The judge set her bond at $7,500/10%. The woman didn't have $750 to post. At her next court date, the woman plead guilty to driving on a suspended license. The woman received a jail sentence of 93 days for the crime of driving on suspended license. Her suspension stemmed from not being able to pay traffic related tickets.
I filed an emergency appeal and helped her get out of jail so she could have her baby under the care of her treating physicians.
